Backup Is Not Disaster Recovery
6 min readMay 17, 2026
A backup is a copy of your data. Disaster recovery is the plan that gets your business running again. They are not the same thing, and confusing them is one of the most expensive mistakes a business can make.
Backups fail silently. They run on a schedule, look successful, and then — when you actually need them — turn out to be incomplete, corrupted, or impossible to restore in time. If you've never tested a restore, you don't have a backup. You have a hope.
Disaster recovery answers the questions that matter in a crisis: How fast can we be operational? What systems come first? Who does what? Where do we restore to? Without those answers, a ransomware attack or major outage becomes a scramble instead of a plan.
Test your backups. Document your recovery steps. Assign roles before you need them. The businesses that survive a serious incident aren't the lucky ones — they're the prepared ones.
